Football for Climate Justice

Football for Climate Justice begins with a simple belief – football can change lives on and off the pitch.

Too often sustainability in sport focuses on carbon footprints and recycling. While these efforts are important, shifting toward a climate justice perspective enables clubs to take action that not only protects the planet but improves the day-to-day lives of fans and their communities.

About the Project

Football for Climate Justice explores how football clubs can take meaningful climate action that supports and enhances their communities.

The project brings together Bohemian FC, Club Brugge, Ferencvárosi TC, FC Twente, FC St. Pauli, Real Betis, Werder Bremen, FUNDACIÓN LALIGA, and TASC. Insights from a fan survey helped clubs collaborate and deliver local initiatives with their communities that addressed specific priorities and had tangible benefits. The learnings have been brought together into a practical framework and set of resources to help clubs across Europe and beyond embed climate justice into their community engagement work.

The initiative is led by Bohemian FC with partner clubs and associations including Wolverhampton Wanderers, ADO Den Haag, Real Betis, and the Bulgarian Football Union, with support from the European Football for Development Network. It kicked off in late 2025 and continues to expand across Europe.
